3 numbers that matter most on Instagram

We like to think that the number of our followers are all that matters for our Instagram account. But the fact is, there are other numbers that matters more – and I’ll explain to you why.

I’m going to put it into perspective here: Look at the 3 examples below, of which I will talk in more detail and explain why they’re way more important than how many people follow your account.

It’s very easy to unfollow and people sadly do it all the time, so it’s important to keep in mind that the specific number of followers will always fluctuate from day to day.

Here is what truly matters:

Engagement Rate

This one is a major component to look at and take seriously. Whatever you post, observe it and ask yourself: What’s the resulting engagement? Meaning: How many comments, likes, shares, or follows do I get by from this one post?

To be able to see all these numbers you need to have a business account on Instagram. That is a must if you run a business and is trying to monetize your Instagram. Data can show you what posts are the most popular, what kind of content your audience loves so you can replicate that.

Your growth

I’m not talking about number of followers here, but how much growth you are seeing on your account. Don’t be discouraged by slow growth! What matters is that you are growing.

Of course it’s normal to lose followers, but if you are losing too many followers for more than a few weeks it’s time to take a look and see what is not working. Are you not being consistent enough? Is your content not solving your audience’s problem? Whatever it is, it is probably time to make some changes.

If you need extra help, it might be time to hire a social media strategist or manager to help you navigate and apply the best strategies to grow your Instagram – did you know that is one of the services I offer? If you want to learn more about how we can work together click here.

Post Impressions

The amount of impressions matters because it shows how much the algorithm is pushing your content to your followers.

Analyze those impressions and make sure to learn from them. Which hashtags did you use that worked better than others? What was in the image that drew more attention? What does the audience like to see? You will get a good idea on what the best approach is and are able to stick with it.

I hope this has helped you to figure out your numbers and to use them wisely for the growth of your Instagram account.
