How to grow your audience with Instagram Guides

Have you noticed anything different about the menu options when you tap on that plus icon on Instagram? Guides are a brand new way to share and consume content on Instagram. The Guides tab will highlight collections of posts under dedicated topic tiles – which has a Pinterest-like feel to it. If you don’t have access yet, hold tight! It should be coming your way soon. In the meantime, I want to share all about how you can grow your audience with Instagram Guides!

Let’s create one!

The new Instagram Guides feature gives users an easier way to share and consume helpful recommendations and tips in a simple, straight-forward format!

To access an Instagram Guide, visit the user’s profile page and select the new Guides plus icon from the feed tab. Select which option you’d like to recommend: Place, Product, or Post – these options are all dependent on your needs as the creator.

You select the posts you want to add to your Guide (either yours or content from other users) and put them into your collection. You can then add a title and description, and change the cover image.

From there, you will be able to see all of the Guides the creator has shared, similar to the IGTV tab. Instagram Guides can be easily saved, shared to Instagram Stories or with other users by selecting the paper plane icon.

What should you share?

If you want to curate a thread of Instagram posts with a customized heading or commentary, then choose “Posts”. This format allows you the opportunity to share inspiration posts, tell stories, and provide guidance.

Share about products available in an Instagram Shop by recommending a “Product” via Instagram Guides. This is a great tool for brand reps or business owners looking to add extra context or commentary to their shoppable products. It also opens up new opportunities for influencer partnerships, as anyone can use this tool to develop a list of recommended products.

Places is great for sharing your location-based recommendations, such as city guides, restaurants, coffee shops, or local small businesses.

How do you promote one?

When visiting a user’s profile, look for the booklet icon between the photo grid icon and tagged photos icon). They’ll also start to appear in the Explore tab. From there, visitors to Guides can share them across their own stories and in direct messages.

This new feature is currently available through the Instagram Explore Page, as well as directly from a user’s profile. 

Instagram Guides create a whole new way to curate and consume content on Instagram. I am excited to see it open up huge opportunities for story-telling and sales straight from the Instagram app!
